Why do we procrastinate? And how do we stop it…

Let’s get one thing straight — procrastination isn’t laziness.

Sure, it’s easy to label it as “putting things off because you can’t be bothered,” but the reality is a lot more complicated than that. Think of it this way: your brain has labelled the task as unpleasant, so it hits the mental brakes.

You’ve got a report due, but suddenly reorganising your desk feels urgent. Ring a bell? That’s your brain at work — nudging you towards comfort and away from anything it’s labelled as unpleasant. Tidying your desk? Quick win. Starting the report? Not actual pain, but definitely more effort and far less instantly rewarding.

So what happens? Your brain avoids the small ‘pain’ of doing the task now, even if it means a bigger ‘pain’ later (for example an even bigger pile of washing up as you’ve left it for days).

But trying to avoid the small ‘pain’ isn’t the only thing going on in your head. In fact, procrastination also comes from your brain overestimating how bad the task will be. It starts to build dread, making the task feel way worse than what it actually is. But nine times out of ten, once you get started you realise it’s not that bad, and for small tasks like washing up, it’s often done before you know it.

If we already understand why we procrastinate, why does it keep happening?

Because old habits don’t vanish overnight. Your brain has been running this pattern for years, so rewiring it takes a bit of patience.

The trick is to notice the moment it starts — that split second before “I’ll do it later” sneaks in. That’s your chance to flip the script. Instead of thinking about the whole job, break it into something so small it feels impossible to refuse.

Kitchen a mess? Forget the full clean — just tackle the dishes.

Dreading a work report? Don’t aim to finish it — just open the file and jot down a couple of ideas.

Once you’re moving, the momentum takes over. The task stops feeling heavy, and your brain realises, “Hey, this isn’t so bad.”

The smaller it feels, the easier it is to start — and starting is half the battle. Before you know it, procrastination doesn’t stand a chance.👋🏻
